On The Money – Vice President Thomas A. Hendricks

The only Vice President (who didn’t become President) to have his image on American money.  Well spoken, a powerful debater, a close-election winner and loser, Thomas Hendricks is the subject of a future episode of the Vice Presidents podcast we are previewing here for our patrons.  His career intersects with Reconstruction, the Civil War, battles over the money supply, temperance, civil service reform and tariffs. Thomas A. Hendricks is controversial – his views on race are correctly seen as misguided in our time, but he also gives insight to the many viewpoints North of the Mason Dixon line at the time of the Civil War.  Plus, he was an example of a Vice President who did not see eye to eye with the President he served, Grover Cleveland, to the point of opposing him publicly and almost creating a foreign policy rough.
