Muskie, Kennedy and Hart. All of them lost their front-runner status due to scandal and poor decision making. I think this is relevant as Bridgegate convictions remind us that a front runner was greatly damaged by a scandal in this year’s election. I discuss the situation of Bridgegate as it looked in 2014; that Chris Christie would have been a likely 2016 GOP nominee absent this scandal. As we predicted his opponents in the GOP found the scandal more useful than Democrats. We did not and could not predict then that the nominee would be Trump, of course.
