No one expected how long the 1924 DNC would go on, in a battle between North and South, Catholics and the Klan. All captured on radio. This episode is from 2011, and doesn’t have a direct relation to today’s politics (I don’t suspect there will be a weak field of candidates for the upcoming election, though it is far away).
It does provide some needed insight to those who might speak of the Democratic party as ‘the Klan.’ It is certainly true in the history of this party there were regional parties that had Klan members. But as we see in this episode there were other equally powerful Democrats battling it out with them. And neither party sadly in 1924 had the courage to pass an anti Klan plank.
